(which is an OT concept) WHY do we come to church each Sunday? Christians aren’t striving to be good to impress God. Christians are striving to let God’s Spirit of life lead their life.
November 6 – What’s Wrong With Me?
Paul cries out, “Wretched man that I am, who will set me free from this body of death?” Why would he say that? Was there something wrong with him? Is there something wrong with us?

God pleads with us in His Word to come to Jesus and not try to save ourselves. He pleads through clear declarations. He pleads through logical explanations. Now, God pleads through the painful and personal experience we each have with sin.

When it comes to our relationship with God, it is tempting for us to begin to act like athletes. We start to take some of the credit. The problem? Taking credit from God leads us to begin minimizing the profound thing God has done for us.

Righteousness is more than just doing the right thing. Righteousness is even more than doing the right thing for the right reason. It is even more than doing it all the time because that is our essential character. Real righteousness is all these things and then adds to them true goodness.

In his declaration that all have sinned, Paul has been using very emotionally laden language to emphasize that humans need Jesus. In his final argument, Paul quotes from God Himself to identify the many ways we show that everyone needs Jesus.

In our day with so many differing definitions of right and wrong, it becomes difficult to embrace wholeheartedly God’s opinion as revealed in the Bible. Yet, God’s Word explains why we can trust God’s judgments.
July 24 – Our Identity is in Christ
What makes a person righteous? Is it the rules they follow? Can anyone follow God’s rules perfectly? Paul challenges Jewish believers in Rome to stop seeing themselves as better than their Gentile counterparts. Like them, those of us who have been in the church for very long must ask if we are still looking to Jesus to be our only righteousness or if we have started to believe our own righteousness makes us better than others.
July 17 – No Partiality, No Excuses
When it comes to our sin, the person we struggle with lying to the most is ourselves. In one moment we justify our behavior by pointing to our motives. In the next moment we justify our motives by comparing ourselves with someone else. Then we abandon all motives and ask God to look at our good deeds. It is a hopeless practice because God knows it all.
July 10 – No Room for Judging
Judging others is a disease that we cannot see the symptoms of. It eats at us until our view of ourselves and God is distorted. Judging others is the second big thing that Paul addresses as he is talking about this wonderful gospel we have been given.

There are times when people do not realize the consequences of their actions. They do not know what will come next. It is at that point that they need someone who has been there to give them input. God tells us what comes next if we would but listen.

April 17 – A Real Hero Has Come
We celebrate the resurrection, not because it is fantastic, but because in the resurrection all the promises of Christ are realized. The resurrection makes Christ’s sacrifice more than mere martyrdom. The resurrection makes the cross a joy rather than simply a sacrifice. The resurrection makes our future secure.

As Paul urges Timothy, God urges us to believe Him. Yes, He wants us to believe in Him. But He also wants to believe Him. He wants us to believe Him when He says that His way is life. He wants us to believe Him when He says all other ways will hurt and maim us. He wants us to stop chasing fruitless paths and discover the one true Way.

We live in a world that has turned industry into a means to an end. Instead of wanting to be productive, we want things. Instead of real security and satisfaction, we settle for stuff. God’s people must be careful of such seduction because it declares that God and His promises are not relevant.

When we think about what the Bible says about work we probably think about being honest, hard-working, and punctual. Being an everyday example of Christ might be on the radar, but is it our reason for being a good employee? God invites us to not just be good at our jobs, he invites us to see those jobs through His eyes.

There are two sides to a healthy church. There is the side of the leader who chases after Jesus. There is also the side of the average believer who also chases after Jesus. Both are necessary for the church to be truly healthy.
