December 25 – What Does the King’s Coming Mean?
There is something fascinating about the birth of Jesus as Matthew shares it. By the time the Magi come everyone involved knows that Jesus is the new king. The Magi know. Herod knows. The priests know. All act on that information. What do we do?
December 18 – The Love of God Seen in How He Acts
We are forgetful. We forget to notice love. We forget to notice the every day acts of caring. We forget that love is seen and expressed in every day actions.
December 11 – Why Is The Coming of Jesus Important?
Mary bursts into praise when Elizabeth expresses her joy at the coming of Mary. She does so, not because of some commercial or cynical motive. She bursts into praise because she knows that God is doing a profound thing in Jesus.
December 4 – Peace When We Struggle Finding Peace
We are told that Jesus is the Prince of Peace. How exactly does that work? What is He doing to bring His peace to us? As part of the essential promises of Christ’s first coming, His peace is important to understand.
November 27 – Waiting For God’s Messiah
During the Christmas season we talk about the promises God made that Jesus would come. In those promises is hope. Yet, it is hard to wait for God to work. Our texts today declare that waiting on Jesus is worth it.
November 20 – Out of Death
Do Christians forget who they are and what they can be? Is it because we have forgotten what we have been set free from? If you forget your freedom, can you live in it?
November 13 – Why Try?
Why do Christians strive to be good? We are saved by grace. We are told that we are no longer under the law. So, WHY do we remind one another of the 10 commandments? WHY do we talk about tithing? (which is an OT concept) WHY do we come to church each Sunday? Christians aren’t striving to be good to impress God. Christians are striving to let God’s Spirit of life lead their life.
November 6 – What’s Wrong With Me?
Paul cries out, “Wretched man that I am, who will set me free from this body of death?” Why would he say that? Was there something wrong with him? Is there something wrong with us?
October 30 – What’s Wrong With the Law?
God pleads with us in His Word to come to Jesus and not try to save ourselves. He pleads through clear declarations. He pleads through logical explanations. Now, God pleads through the painful and personal experience we each have with sin.
October 23 – Bound to Jesus
When we talk about being a faithful citizen we talk about certain characteristics: loyalty, pride, and perspective. It makes a difference to what country you belong. Our relationship with Jesus should make such a difference to us.
October 16 – Which Master?
Spiritually, we have a great assurance that we will grow as Jesus lives in us. We are also told that we can put ourselves in the position to grow better and stronger. We put ourselves in the position to grow through discipline and repeatedly making good choices.
October 9 – Living Christ’s Life Every Day
Living in holiness is not a hobby. It is a completely different type of living. It is so different that the Bible uses death language to help us understand the difference. Our challenge is to truly embrace that difference.
October 2 – Baptized Unto Death
Why keep sinning? Can you answer that question? This week we examine Paul’s answer to that question. He had been accused of teaching a ‘good news’ that encouraged people to do whatever they wanted. What many folks don’t realize is that Paul’s gospel invites us to die and let the life we now live to be a Jesus life!
September 25 – Real Grace
Grace. For some it is just a word that means “believing in Jesus.” However, it is much more than that. It is a word that means something specific and something wonderful. We need to know what that is today.
September 18 – Our Secure Hope
When we think about our own value, why should we hope? Are we the best? Are we the most beautiful? Or, have we been so loved that all doubts of our value should be swept away like a morning mist?
September 11 – The Process of Growth
In our world, pain is something we are always trying to avoid. However, the myth of comfort without consequence is a lie that traps and compromises us. True Christian growth comes when we embrace struggling as a necessary part of the process.
September 4 – The Family of Faith
Why did God give us the story of Abraham? Does God just like history or is there a way He wants us to use Abraham’s journey to help us in ours? Abraham’s life can lead our life of faith in the freedom we have in Christ and the family connection we have with other believers.
August 28 – Abraham’s Path
When we think of how we walk with Jesus we know that we need examples. Abraham’s life may seem far away to us. Yet, his life is actually our path too.
August 21 – Who Gets the Glory?
When it comes to our relationship with God, it is tempting for us to begin to act like athletes. We start to take some of the credit. The problem? Taking credit from God leads us to begin minimizing the profound thing God has done for us.
August 14 – The Righteousness of God
Righteousness is more than just doing the right thing. Righteousness is even more than doing the right thing for the right reason. It is even more than doing it all the time because that is our essential character. Real righteousness is all these things and then adds to them true goodness.
August 7 – Paul’s Real List of Human Offenses
In his declaration that all have sinned, Paul has been using very emotionally laden language to emphasize that humans need Jesus. In his final argument, Paul quotes from God Himself to identify the many ways we show that everyone needs Jesus.
July 31 – Worship at the Fair! God is Right that We Need Jesus!
In our day with so many differing definitions of right and wrong, it becomes difficult to embrace wholeheartedly God’s opinion as revealed in the Bible. Yet, God’s Word explains why we can trust God’s judgments.
July 24 – Our Identity is in Christ
What makes a person righteous? Is it the rules they follow? Can anyone follow God’s rules perfectly? Paul challenges Jewish believers in Rome to stop seeing themselves as better than their Gentile counterparts. Like them, those of us who have been in the church for very long must ask if we are still looking to Jesus to be our only righteousness or if we have started to believe our own righteousness makes us better than others.
July 17 – No Partiality, No Excuses
When it comes to our sin, the person we struggle with lying to the most is ourselves. In one moment we justify our behavior by pointing to our motives. In the next moment we justify our motives by comparing ourselves with someone else. Then we abandon all motives and ask God to look at our good deeds. It is a hopeless practice because God knows it all.
July 10 – No Room for Judging
Judging others is a disease that we cannot see the symptoms of. It eats at us until our view of ourselves and God is distorted. Judging others is the second big thing that Paul addresses as he is talking about this wonderful gospel we have been given.
Scripture(s): Romans 2:1-8
July 3 – Sin – What’s the Big Deal
There are times when people do not realize the consequences of their actions. They do not know what will come next. It is at that point that they need someone who has been there to give them input. God tells us what comes next if we would but listen.
June 26 – Sin – Who Gets Our Attention?
Sometimes, people make sin about how people treat one another. However, if we reduce sin to merely that, we miss the point. We, yet again, make our life about just us. Life is about God. We should be thinking about Him first.
June 19 – The Power of God to Save
In this message Pastor Alex shares why Christians never need to be shy about believing in or sharing the gospel of Jesus.
June 12 – A Vision of the Transformed Life
As we think about what it means to be saved, sometimes we talk about it with the language of transaction. We can forget sometimes, but God never forgets that saving us is His declaration that we are His beloved.
June 5 – Called of God
As we think about what it means to be saved, sometimes we talk about it with the language of transaction. We can forget sometimes, but God never forgets that saving us is His declaration that we are His beloved.
May 29 – Christ, the God Who Saves
The name of “Jesus” means different things to different people. Yes, the real Jesus is always the real Jesus; but who He is to us is significant. If we reject His claims, His judgment is how we will know Him. If we receive Him, then we can know Him so much better.
May 22 – The One You Listen To
There is a story that is woven through the Old Testament. As God’s people were drawn out of a community that had created gods in their own image, God set out to prove that He was the only true God. He set out to help all of us understand that the only true God is the One you and I must listen to.
May 15 – Worth Our Allegiance
Who God is can be an academic discussion. It can be about information and even appreciation. Yet, in the Bible we see that those who really know Him understand God in another way. Who God is calls them to respond.
May 8 – God is the Greatest of All, the Real and the Possible (part 2)
As we think about who God is to us, it is important that we let who He is to us come from the Bible. It is important that we let the Bible speak to us about who He is so that our own misconceptions can be laid to rest. When we hear from God’s Word, we will know that God is the greatest of all beings – both real and possible.
May 1 – God is the Greatest of All, the Real and the Possible
As we think about who God is to us, it is important that we let who He is to us come from the Bible. It is important that we let the Bible speak to us about who He is so that our own misconceptions can be laid to rest. When we hear from God’s Word, we will know that God is the greatest of all beings – both real and possible.
April 24 – Why Be a Christian?
Think for a moment to how you would finish this statement – I will be happy when… Perhaps our answer tells us more than just what makes us happy. Perhaps it tells us why true joy is so hard to find.
Scripture: Romans 8:1-9
April 17 – A Real Hero Has Come
We celebrate the resurrection, not because it is fantastic, but because in the resurrection all the promises of Christ are realized. The resurrection makes Christ’s sacrifice more than mere martyrdom. The resurrection makes the cross a joy rather than simply a sacrifice. The resurrection makes our future secure.
April 10 – The Final Charge
As Paul urges Timothy, God urges us to believe Him. Yes, He wants us to believe in Him. But He also wants to believe Him. He wants us to believe Him when He says that His way is life. He wants us to believe Him when He says all other ways will hurt and maim us. He wants us to stop chasing fruitless paths and discover the one true Way.
April 3 – The Seduction of Greed
(which is… This Life is the One that Matters)
We live in a world that has turned industry into a means to an end. Instead of wanting to be productive, we want things. Instead of real security and satisfaction, we settle for stuff. God’s people must be careful of such seduction because it declares that God and His promises are not relevant.
March 20 – Our Everyday Witness
When we think about what the Bible says about work we probably think about being honest, hard-working, and punctual. Being an everyday example of Christ might be on the radar, but is it our reason for being a good employee? God invites us to not just be good at our jobs, he invites us to see those jobs through His eyes.
March 13 – Elders, Sin, and Caring about Truth
There are two sides to a healthy church. There is the side of the leader who chases after Jesus. There is also the side of the average believer who also chases after Jesus. Both are necessary for the church to be truly healthy.
March 6 – Living Well Together as Family
Although God uses Paul to set out some big picture ways for us to grow in Christ, He also uses Paul to address some very difficult and specific areas of Christian growth. These areas challenge us if we have come to think of the church as a club to which we belong. They challenge us to be a healthy family.
February 27 – Persistent Actions of Growth (part 2)
In our passage today, Paul is not trying to build an argument FOR growing in godliness. Nor is Paul trying to discourage us from certain behaviors. He simply wants to describe for us what a person who is growing in godliness looks like. Our question, “Do we look like that person?”
February 20 – Persistent Actions of Growth
In our passage today, Paul is not trying to build an argument FOR growing in godliness. Nor is Paul trying to discourage us from certain behaviors. He simply wants to describe for us what a person who is growing in godliness looks like. Our question, “Do we look like that person?”
February 13 – Growing on Purpose
There is no secret formula for becoming a strong and healthy Christian. Becoming a mature Christian is not a spiritual gift that only some have. Spiritual growth is for every Christian who will respond to God’s call.
February 6 – Why Train to Be Godly?
There are those who turn freedom into slavery to sin. This is the path of licentiousness. There are also those who turn righteousness into a slavery to rules. It doesn’t matter if we are a slave to sin or a slave to rules. Slavery is slavery. Neither path leads us to God.
January 30 – Why Who We Are Matters
Pragmatism is directly tied to getting results. We feel the pressure to get results. We call it “the bottom line”. When we begin to believe that certain results are what God cares about, then we start pushing aside those things we think are secondary or unimportant.
January 23 – The Character of the Deacon
A deacon’s job is not the most glamorous in the life of the church. They do not have positions of power. They do not get glory. Instead, they call us to a higher calling. It is the calling of service. They should be everyday heroes.
January 16 – The Right Man for the Job
Paul could have encouraged us to have leaders who had certain skills or giftedness. That’s not what he does. Paul encourages to pay attention to the type of people our leaders are. He does this because those who will truly lead well will be those character shows that they are truly chasing after Jesus.
January 9 – The Character that Prays
Do you remember the Biblical admonition, “A man reaps what he sows?” Do we understand how that applies to our character? It is people of godly character who truly respond to God’s call to pray.
January 2 – Why Share Jesus?
Guest speaker, Al Pietsch, challenges us to heed the call to share Jesus. Why? Because He lives!
