The parable of the prodigal son teaches us several big things about the love of God. He pursues us like the father running out to greet his long lost son. He celebrates with us extravagantly like, having the best animals prepared to welcome home the errant child. How do we come to truly understand this total love and forgiveness when we are so incapable of it ourselves?
