December 29 – The Prince of Peace
Scripture(s): Isaiah 9:6-7
Jesus offers peace. However, it is not the absence of hurt or a panacea to cure all ills. It is a peace of the soul. It is also a life of peace that we must choose.
December 22 – Everlasting Father
Scripture(s): Isaiah 9:1-7
Just like modern day fathers, our understanding of Jesus can be muddled in the Father category as well. It is important that we understand that fathers are people you can depend on to take care of you. This is what we are promised in Jesus.
December 15 – Jesus, He is God
Scripture(s): Isaiah 9:1-7 & assorted texts
When we come to the baby in the manger, who do we find there? We do not just find a healthy infant. We also find God.
Scripture(s): Isaiah 9:1-6
When it comes to trust, the proof is always in the doing. It isn’t enough to simply agree that someone is right. We must act on their advice before we really trust them. Do we live that way with Jesus?
Scripture(s): Isaiah 9:1-7
The words that describe the coming of Jesus are not just held out there with no connection to the lives of people. The prophecies of Jesus are directly connected to the events of the day. Why? They are connected because Jesus is connected to the events of the day. He was connected to their lives then, and He is connected to our lives now.
November 24 – Guest Speaker: Warren Jernstad – What is Hell?
November 17 – What Love Can You Trust?
Scripture(s): 1 John 4:1-6 Many people mean well when they express love. However, we need to know that love is both an emotion and reality. The love that we depend on must be the love that comes from God.
November 10 – More Powers of Love
Scripture(s): 1 John 3:17-24
God’s love can overwhelm us. We feel unworthy. We must understand that this great love is just God’s gift to us. Living in this love is not just something in which we are involved. The love of God is intended to fundamentally change who we are.
November 3 – Can I Really Study My Own Bible?
Bible study is not difficult as we might think. However, it does take two things: care and time. What it requires is that we keep in mind a few straightforward principles.
Scripture(s): James 1:13-15 (and assorted scriptures)
October 20 – Living Water, Bread of Life
Scripture(s): John 4:7-15; 6:47-58; 10:1-15, 27-28
God is so big, we might feel lost in the shuffle. Jesus gives us three teachings that declare we won’t get lost. He is the One who will never leave, never forsake, and never fail. He truly loves us.
October 13 – The Glory of Prophecy (Part 2)
Scripture(s): 2 Peter 3:3-15 (and assorted verses)
There are many ways to do an overview of prophecy. You can do a timeline. You can focus on end times prophecy. Our purpose today is to answer a specific question: Why does God tell us the future anyway? In answering that question we will discover the glory of prophecy and what it is supposed to do in us.
October 6 – The Glory of Prophecy
Scripture(s): 2 Peter 3:3-15 (and assorted verses)
When we see how much God has told us we discover two glorious truths. First, we see that God has always kept His Word. He does not tell us things that do not come to pass. Second, we can face the future with the calm assurance that God will do what He has said He will do.
September 29 – Special Service of prayer for our church family
(No recording)
September 22 – Biblical Love Calls us Higher
Scripture(s): 1 John 3:11-16
What is so convicting? Love. Why? Love calls the believer to be more. This calling either comfort us because we say yes or convicts us because we have rejected it. What about you?
Scripture(s): 1 John 3:4-10
The problem with the excuses we use about sin is that we tend to minimize sin. Do we see sin like God does? God is begging us to give up our sin. Will we?
September 8 – The Response to Love
Scripture(s): 1 John 3:1-3
When we really understand what God has done for us in Jesus we will experience gratitude. God’s love overwhelms the one who understands it with profound gratitude.
September 1 – The Confidence of Abiding
Scripture(s): 1 John 2:28-29
Why is it that people struggle with knowing that Jesus accepts them? It isn’t because the Bible doesn’t say so. It isn’t because the Bible is unclear about God’s commitment to us. We struggle with knowing the reality of the love of God because unconnected facts don’t give hugs. Let’s find out what will today.
August 25 – The Power of Abiding
Scripture(s): 1 John 2:24-27
How does a person “abide” with Jesus? How does a person stay in the love of God? Do you ever struggle with that? Do you ever feel distant from Jesus? Do you ever find yourself wondering if God loves you as much as you thought He did?
Scripture(s): 1 John 2: 18-23
The problem with sin is that it never looks that bad. By the time we discover the evil we are in, we are already in trouble. Jesus wants us to see how evil those sins really are.
August 11 – Building: Preparing to Overcome
Scripture(s): 1 John 2:15-17
Today, we need to build upon what we know about the world. We need to make a clear decision for ourselves. Can we serve God and chase after the world?
Scripture(s): 1 John 2:12-14
There is a lot of darkness in our world. If we are going to overcome it, we must start building our lives well. Let’s examine together how God calls us to build so that we can overcome.
Scripture(s): 1 John 2:7-12
The key landmark in the road of life is love. Not an abstract, “I love people,” sort of thing but a desire to bless the people in your life that is real and motivates the life decisions we make. Without this type of love, we walk in darkness.
Scripture(s): 1 John 2:3-6
Christians wonder why they do not experience more of God in their lives. We wonder why there isn’t more joy. We wonder why there isn’t more life, hope, and victory. We forget that seeking life is not something you do once and then it is done. Life is found when trusting God is always a “today” decision.
Scripture(s): 1 John 1:5-2:2
Distortion is a real problem. Not just with our eyes, but also with our lives. Distortion causes us to not see who we really are. Distortion causes us to not see what life is really about. Distortion makes us accept the fake instead of what is real. Distortion makes us spend time on worthless things rather than things that are important. This distortion is sin.
Scripture(s): 1 John 1:1-4
John’s question today: Do we have to let our circumstances dictate our life? Purpose gives both meaning and joy to those who embrace it. John’s advice? Embrace our purpose and we will find life.
Scripture(s): Philippians 4:10-23
For too many joy and success are circumstance dependent. Not for Paul. He has found the secret of joy. It is also the secret of seeing success. It is also the secret of prayer – thankfulness.
June 23 – The Practice of Prayer
Scripture(s): Daniel 6:1-10; Matthew 14:13; Ephesians 6:18-19; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; Luke 18:1-8; Matthew 6:5-8
Practice is what moves a hit and miss prayer life into a pattern of life. Yet, how do we practice prayer so that it becomes our pattern?
Scripture(s): Galatians 3:10-12; Ephesians 2:8-10; Matthew 13:44-46; Revelation 2:4-5; 1 John 1:5-10; 1 Timothy 1:15-17; Acts 19:18; 1 Peter 5:5-7; Philippians 3:7-11; 1 Corinthians 10:31
Glorifying Jesus is not as impossible as we think. Yet, it is hard. However, it isn’t hard because it is hard to please God. Jesus has taken care of that. It is hard because of how tempting hypocrisy is to us.
Scripture(s): Exodus 4:1-13; 14-17; 3:10-12, 13-14; Acts 13:4-13; Acts 26:9-11
There are a variety of ways that Christians can go for Jesus. Some become missionaries. Some serve on short term missions. Some invest in local ministries. Some serve in their church. Some empower others. All of them feel the urging of God and His Word. They are us.
Scripture(s): 2 Corinthians 8 & 9
Becoming a generous giver seems to be impossible to many of us. Perhaps it is because we have wrong impressions of giving. Perhaps it is because we have the wrong impression of our gift.
Scripture(s): 1 Corinthians 12
Paul challenges the Corinthian church to a more excellent way of understanding how they all fit together. This way challenges us. It asks us to stop comparing our gifts to one another and instead to just actively love one another in service.
Scripture(s): Acts 4:19-20; 1 John 1:1-4; Romans 10:5-13; Acts 22:1-11; Acts 8:26-31; Luke 9:23-27
Making simple things difficult is alarmingly easy to do. Now, if we all loved hard things it wouldn’t be a big deal. However, too often hard things intimidate us. When it comes to witnessing, we must remove the difficult and come back to the simple.
Scripture(s): Titus 2:1-8; Matthew 28:18-20; Proverbs 22:6; Psalms 78:3-4; Titus 2:7-8; Hebrews 13:7; 2 Timothy 2:2&15; James 3:1; Colossians 3:16; 2 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 4:12; James 1:5
Yes, teaching is one of the spiritual gifts in the Bible. However, every Christian is called to teach. Understanding this calling means that we see the connection between formal teaching and the teaching we are all called to do.
May 5 – I Can’t Worship, Can I?
Scripture(s): John 4:23-24; Matthew 22:36-38; Philippians 2:9-11,3:3; Revelation 5:9-10; Luke 19:36-40; Matthew 21:15-16; Song of Solomon 1:1-4
Real worship happens when saved people lift up Jesus with all their being either together or by themselves. When we mean it and when we do it, we are we are worshiping.
April 21 – Easter Sunday – Why does the Resurrection Matter?
Scripture(s): 1 Corinthians 15:14–23; 1 Corinthians 15:29-32; Revelation 21:4; 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17; Romans 6:6-11; Colossians 2:12, 3:1
When we come to the week Jesus died, we focus much on the details. We think about the suffering. We think about His sacrifice. Yet, the early church believed so strongly in the importance of the resurrection that they changed the day of worship because of it. Why is the resurrection so important?
April 14 – Jesus on the Road to the Cross
Scripture(s): Luke 9, 12, 13, 18, 19, 22, 23
Propitiation. Vicarious, penal substitutionary atonement. For most of us these are simply big words without any bite. However, if we say that the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin, that means something to us. If we say that He who knew no sin became sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. That means something to us. What is the greatest thing? That it didn’t happen by accident or by circumstance. Jesus died on purpose for you.
April 7 – The Place of Jesus in History
Scripture(s): Luke 20:9-20
The Parable of the Vine-growers is not a story about getting saved. It’s not a story about being good or living by God’s standards. It is a story about Jesus and the enemies of God… religious people.
March 31 – Throwing Down the Gauntlet
Scripture(s): Joshua 24
I read the first and last chapters of Joshua and I think… This is how men think! They think of the challenge. They think of the mountain they are called to climb, and then the soldier, mountain man, and teenager in them responds, “Here am I, send me!”
Scripture(s): Joshua 23
We worry about our friends and neighbors because of the wickedness of the world. However, we must begin by passing on our faith to those in the church.
March 17 – Sin, Zeal & Misunderstanding
Scripture(s): Joshua 22
Have we really thought about why Jesus criticized the Pharisees and teachers of the law? They were the most morally conservative Jews alive. Many of them actually lived by what they believed (Saul of Tarsus was one of them). Why did Jesus criticize them? It was because they ignored the how and why and just focused on the what. When it comes to sin, we had better do the same.
March 10 -Preparing for the Future
Scripture(s): Joshua 20-21
They say that the ostrich buries its head in the sand. Fun fact: it does so to turn its eggs, not hide from danger. Yet, that has become the picture of a person who tries to hide from what they fear. God urges us to prepare for rather than hide from the challenges of life.
February 24 – Following Faithfully
Scripture(s): Joshua 11-19
When we become Christians we are told two things. First, that Jesus will make our way to God. Second, that we now follow Jesus in everything. What does that really look like.
February 17 – The Two Front War
Scripture(s): 1 Peter 2:11-12
It takes a tactical genius to win a war with two fronts. If God warns us that the war against our soul hits us on multiple fronts, aren’t we glad that He is such a genius?
February 10 – God’s Peculiar Sovereignty
Scripture(s): Joshua 10
For those who believe in Jesus, there is also a background to our lives. We see the disciples struggle with it. We see Jesus live it. What is that background? God’s control is never in doubt.
February 3 – When God’s People Forget to Pray
Scripture(s): Joshua 9:1-27
What happens when God’s people forget to pray? Are there any real consequences?
January 27 – Recommitting to God
Scripture(s): Joshua 8:1-34
If you have ever realized that you have let God down, then you know the definition of being demoralized. You know what that failure feels like. You are also asking, “How can it ever be right again?”
January 20 – Taking Sin Seriously
Scripture(s): Joshua 7:16-26
Somewhere along the way many churches stopped communicating that repentance was a good thing. A false ideal of “perfect Christians” makes people hide who they are from the very help they need.
January 13 – The Consequences of Sin
Scripture(s): Joshua 7:1-15
There are two words that we must not avoid if we are going to have a strong relationship with God. In fact, we must embrace them: confession and repentance.
January 6 – Genesis 1 – Let There Be Light
