December 31 – Guest speaker, Terry Wilkinson

December 24 – Behind the Scenes

Scripture(s): Luke 2:1-20

In the life of Mary and Joseph, God was working behind the scenes.  He was calling forth people.  He was setting things in motion.  He does it still today.  What a hope that we have (and what a surprise!): our lives are not accidents.  He is at work.

December 17 – Seeing the Love of God

Scripture(s): Matthew 1:18-25

One of the great surprises we experience in life is the love of others. We are surprised that others value us.  We are surprised at their commitment.  The same is true of God. For Mary, Joseph was that picture.

December 10 – The Sacrifices of Mary

Scripture(s): Luke 1:26-40

Let us consider the cost Mary was willing to pay to be a part of God’s story.  Let us note her cost and then ask if we treat God with the same worth.

December 3 – Surprised by God’s Call

Scripture(s): Luke 1 5-25; 57-66

When God calls us He doesn’t use a cell phone.  He uses His Word. He uses circumstances that cry out for someone to step up.  He uses other people.  But, we are still surprised when God calls us, aren’t we?  And we struggle with what God is asking of us, don’t we? Are we alone?

November 26 – Thanksgiving – The Antidote to Forgetting God.

Scripture(s): Psalms 92:1-7; Romans 1:20-23; Ephesians 5:3-5

How could I be surprised by all that God has done in my life? Wasn’t I there? We are surprised because we have a disease. We have the disease of forgetfulness.

November 19 – Joy: God is Worth It

Scripture(s): Matthew 13:44-46; 1 Samuel 19:5-6; Psalm 51:8; Proverbs 15:13, 21, 23; Psalm 84:2, 95:1-2; 1 Thessalonians 1:2-7; Hebrews 10:32-35

When we talk about joy we describe it as different from happiness in that circumstances don’t change it.  How can that be? What is Biblical joy that takes it beyond an emotion?

November 12 – Where is Peace?

Scripture(s): John 14:23-27; Romans 2:9-11; Romans 5:1-2; 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24; Philippians 3:20-4:7; Romans 12:9-21; James 3:17-18; Luke 12:51-53

Jesus promises that He gives peace. He also promises that He gives peace in a way that no one else does. So, isn’t time that we look closely at where we might find such peace?

November 5 – What is Love?

Scripture(s): 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Love is the antidote to selfishness. The problem comes when we don’t realize the depths of selfishness we have. God’s description of love challenges each level of selfishness.

October 29 – The Love of God and Faith…

Scripture(s): Romans 5:1-5; Luke 11:42; John 5:41-42; 1 John 2:5; Roans 8:37-39; 2 Thessalonians 3:3-5; 1 John 3:16-17; 1 John 4:9; 1 John 5:3; Jude 1:20-23; Titus 3:1-5

Why do we trust God’s character? It is because of the type of love He expresses. That is unique with the God of the Bible. His is not a capricious love. (a love that changes based upon His mood). His is a steadfast and genuine love. We will define that love more in a future sermon. Today we ask the question… When the New Testament speaks of the love of God, what that love inviting us to know?

October 22 – Faith, Love, and Ruining both with Works

Scripture(s): Ephesians 2:4-9; Romans 6:21-23; 1 Peter 1:3-5; Isaiah 64:6; Romans 4:14-17; Titus 3:3-7; Philippians 1:29-30

Why do I love Thee? Let me count the ways. Is it because Thou give me such good gifts when I do? Or is it because your good gifts show me how good you are? Do I believe in you to make Heaven possible for myself? Or do I believe in You because you have made Heaven possible for me?

October 15 – Hope in God

Scripture(s): Romans 8:18-28; Hebrews 10:12-13; Ruth 1:12-13; Psalm 25:3-5, 20-21

Hope is a perspective that trust produces. Trust creates it. Trust upholds it. So, what is it?

There are 4 basic uses of the words faith and believe in our Bibles. They aren’t separate and optional to one another. They connect for our blessing and life. Are we connecting them?

Scripture(s): 1 & 2 Thessalonians

The secret to the passionate Christian life is not found in our personalities or even our gifts.  The passionate Christian life is found in the genuine belief that the One we love will use us to make a difference.

June 4 – Christianity is not a Belief

Scripture(s): Colossians 1-4

Many people treat our faith as if it is a philosophy or information.  That is so enlightenment of us: we make salvation into a set of principles to follow.  The Bible is a little more old fashioned.  Salvation is a person – Jesus.

April – 23 – I Am Good Enough

Scripture(s): Romans 1, 2, 3

People consistently act like Jesus is optional to life.  Why is that?  It is because we are many times under a very powerful delusion: we are good enough just the way we are.  The book of Romans was written to answer that delusion.

April 16 – Our Reason to Rejoice

It is easy to get discouraged with the storms and battering of life. The greatest discouragement comes when we forget the power that is with us.  The resurrection reminds us of the power of Christ in our life.

Scripture(s): Luke 6:31-36; Matthew 7:1-5; 1 John 4:18-19

When we interact with people an unusual test of our faith occurs.  It is the test of judgment.  In other words, do we really believe that God will handle all the conviction our friends and family need?  Or, do we need to help Him a bit?
